Executive summary

Data overview:

The data was published by Alves da Silva A, Alves J, Chytrý M, Sousa JP (UCOI) on the B-GOOD Bee Health Data Portal as part of the B-GOOD project (grant agreement 817622), funded under the EU Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. It is an updated and refined version of the EUNIS terrestrial Level 2 habitat product, which is divided into biogeographical regions. It is based on Deliverable D3.1. (Database of Relevant Resources for Honey Bees).

Data value:

The objectives of the B-GOOD project were: (1) Facilitate decision making for beekeepers and other stakeholders by establishing ready-to-use tools for operationalising the HSI; (2) Test, standardise and validate methods for measuring and reporting selected indicators affecting bee health; (3) Explore the various socio-economic and ecological factors beyond bee health; (4) Foster an EU community to collect and share knowledge related to honey bees and their environment; (5) Engender a lasting learning and innovation system (LIS); (6) Minimise the impact of biotic and abiotic stressors.

Data description:

The dataset consists of 5 tables: BIOEUNIS Status and Solution (58.43 KB), BF Index BIOEUNIS (37.83 MB), Species Average Cover BIOEUNIS (37.81 MB), Species BF Value (413.78 KB) and Species Occurrence BIOEUNIS (37.71 MB). In additionm it contains a metadata file (BIOEUNIS - Database metadata.pdf) and the BIOEUNIS-Biogeographical EUNIS Level 2 terrestrial habitats map (BIOEUNIS.pdf). The BIOEUNIS map depicts the spatial distribution of BIOEUNIS terrestrial Level 2 habitats across Europe.

Data application:

The dataset complies with all the criteria that datasets archived on the EU Pollinator Hub have to comply with. Additional metadata that describes the methods used to calculate the various parameters (Solution, Status, Bee-friendliness (BF) index, Average cover, Robustness, Occurrence) even better (e.g. links to documents, scientific articles) might be added and the publication Janovský Z. (2020) Pollinator spectrum. – www.pladias.cz mentioned in the metadata sheet should be reviewed, as it cannot be found on the link that was provided.

Introduction

The BIOEUNIS Biogeographical EUNIS Level 2 Terrestrial Habitats Database of Relevant Resources for Honey Bees product is an updated and refined version of the EUNIS terrestrial Level 2 habitat product, which is divided into biogeographical regions. It is based on the deliverable D3.1: Database of Relevant Resources for Honey Bees. The primary goal of BIOEUNIS was to develop a product that improves the spatial precision and accuracy of the EUNIS terrestrial Level 2 habitat plant composition. As a result, we were able to better describe the habitats in terms of their importance as resources for honey bees. To that end, the EUNIS terrestrial Level 2 habitats were divided into biogeographical regions. The BIOEUNIS is a new map of the biogeographical EUNIS terrestrial Level 2 habitats, created as a result of this process. Using the new BIOEUNIS classes, all European vegetation plots in the EVA database were reclassified to these new BIOEUNIS habitat classes by implementing a modified version of the expert system: EUNIS-ESy (Expert system for automatic classification of European vegetation plots to EUNIS habitats, version: 2021-06-01). Using the BIOEUNIS classes, synoptic tables were created to determine the plant composition (occurrence and average cover) of each BIOEUNIS terrestrial Level 2 habitat. The BF Index was recalculated for each BIOEUNIS using the new plant composition of the BIOEUNIS classes and the BF Value of each plant species.

Table BF Index BIOEUNIS contains the bee-friendliness index (BF Index) that corresponds to the contribution of each plant species in terms of bee-friendliness within a particular BIOEUNIS habitat (see Deliverable D3.1. section 2.4 of Methodology for further details). The BF index was calculated as the multiplication of the BF Value by occurrence and by average cover, i.e. BF Index = BF Value x Occurrence x Average cover. The higher the BF index, the greater the contribution of a plant species in terms of bee-friendliness within the habitat. This sheet has 7998 plant species (like the Species BF Value sheet) present at each EUNIS terrestrial Level 2 habitat. It is organized so the rows correspond to the plant species and the columns represent each BIOEUNIS terrestrial Level 2 habitat that is spatially explicitly defined at the EU scale in the Ecosystem Type Map (ETM) v3.1 (Weiss and Banko, 2018) and sub divided by Biogeographical regions (EEA, 2016) and that is defined in terms of vegetation composition.

In computer programming, a string is traditionally a sequence of characters, either as a literal constant or as some kind of variable. The latter may allow its elements to be mutated and the length changed, or it may be fixed (after creation). A string is generally considered as a data type and is often implemented as an array data structure of bytes (or words) that stores a sequence of elements, typically characters, using some character encoding. String may also denote more general arrays or other sequence (or list) data types and structures.

Description

Status proposed for determining plant species composition (occurrence and average cover) and calculating the bee-friendliness index (BF Index) for each BIOEUNIS terrestrial Level 2 habitat that is defined or not in terms of vegetation composition.

Data type String
Descriptor Text [UID:0.0.TEXTA315]
Descriptor description

In computer programming, a string is traditionally a sequence of characters, either as a literal constant or as some kind of variable. The latter may allow its elements to be mutated and the length changed, or it may be fixed (after creation). A string is generally considered as a data type and is often implemented as an array data structure of bytes (or words) that stores a sequence of elements, typically characters, using some character encoding. String may also denote more general arrays or other sequence (or list) data types and structures.
