Abstract

This dataset is a collection of data related to honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) in Austria.

Executive summary

Data overview

This dataset is a collection of data related to honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) in Austria.

Data value

This dataset was primarily collected to describe all economical, ecological and organizational aspects and to predict future developments of the Austrian beekeeping industry. Moreover, it is intended to be used as a basis and a practical example for data standardization (e.g. the Apimondia BeeXML working group).

Data description

Data for this dataset are stored in 40 data tables related to production, trade of honey bees and beehive products, beekeeping operations, honey bee health, plant protection products, organisations and metrics of internet search engines as well as reference files.

Data application

This data is suited to produce concise tabular and graphical overviews and summaries on a range of social, economic and ecological parameters for stakeholders in the Austrian beekeeping industry. Possible research questions include the following:

  1. What is the most current number of beehives in Austria? How did the number of beehives evolve in time in different areas (administrative units) and organisations? What is predicted for the near future?
  2. What is the most current number of beekeepers/beekeeping operations? How did the number of beekeepers evolve in time in different areas (administrative units) and organisations? What is predicted for the near future?
  3. What is the most current number of organisations? How did the number of organisations evolve in time in different areas (administrative units)? What is predicted for the near future?
  4. What is the most current amount/price/value of honey produced in Austria? How did production evolve in time in different areas (administrative units, agricultural units)? What is predicted for the near future?
  5. What is the most current domestic consumption of honey in Austria? What is the current and past percentage of self-sufficiency in honey production in Austria? How did the numbers evolve in time? What is predicted for the near future?
  6. What is the most current amount/value of honey imported to Austria? Where do imports originate from (absolute and percentage)? How did the numbers evolve in time? What is predicted for the near future?
  7. What is the most current amount/value of honey exported from Austria? Where are exports destinated to (absolute and percentage)? How did the numbers evolve in time? What is predicted for the near future?
  8. What is the most current number of outbreaks of American Foulbrood in Austria? How did the numbers evolve in time in different areas (administrative units)? What is predicted for the near future?
  9. What is the most current number of dead/killed/cured colonies (absolute and in relation to the number of bee colonies kept) due to American Foulbrood in Austria)? How did the numbers evolve in time in different areas (administrative units)? What is predicted for the near future?
  10. What is the most current average infestation level / percentage of colonies above and below threshold of Varroa destructor reported in monitoring colonies of the Austrian Varroa monitoring program? How did the numbers evolve in time in different areas (administrative units)? What is predicted for the near future?
  11. What is the most current average rate of winter losses in Austria as reported in the annual survey of the University of Graz? How did the numbers evolve in time in different areas (administrative units)? What is predicted for the near future?
  12. What is the most current number of plant protection products approved in Austria? How did the numbers evolve in time? What is predicted for the near future?
  13. What is the most current total amount of active ingredients of plant protection products/insecticides marketed in Austria (absolute and per unit agricultural surface)? How did the numbers evolve in time? What is predicted for the near future?
  14. What is the most current amount of the different classes of insecticides marketed in Austria? How did the numbers evolve in time? What is predicted for the near future?

Introduction

The Austrian beekeeping industry, like many others, suffers from a lack of reliable data on the sector, making it difficult to implement efficient policies at national and regional level. This lack of data is partly due to the fact, that for the great majority of individuals beekeeping is a leisure activity and their considerable economic output is not recorded, partly also due to a lack of awareness for the value of data driven decisions. The current dataset has been collected by the Austrian beekeeping federation Biene Österreich to accelerate the production of annual reports on the Austrian beekeeping sector and requires regular manual update.

Material and methods

Data acquisition

Data was obtained from several sources by the Austrian beekeeping federation Biene Österreich.

Data preparation

Raw data was prepared with Excel (Microsoft Corporation, version 16.0.15601.20148). Data was then exported from Excel to a CSV format (coding: UTF-8) and subsequently imported for profiling into a SQL database (MariaDB foundation, Server-Version 10.4.24) running in a XAMPP environment (BitRock, version 3.3.0). Data was exported from the MySQL database to CSV format using UTF-8 coding.
