Description

The table contains the results from the calibration of operators for the estimation of the number of bees on frames. The persons who estimated colony size had to carry out a calibration immediately before the start of the estimation if the last calibration was more than a week ago. For the calibration, 20 photos of frames with a known number (578-1278) of bees were presented to the persons carrying out the estimation in order to determine measurement accuracy.

Description

The table contains the results from the assessments of colony size. The number of adult bees in a colony was determined by estimation. The estimation was carried out before the start of flight (<12°C) in all frames of a colony by 2 persons, whereby one person estimated the number of adult bees and a second person recorded the data in writing. The estimation was always started in the bottom hive box. The colony was opened accompanied by a few puffs of smoke. The number of bees on the bottom board and on the frame walls was estimated to the nearest 50 bees. Then a frame was removed from the box and the number of bees sitting on each side of the frame was estimated to the nearest 50 bees. The geometric shape of the brood nest (elliptical or rectangular) was noted and its maximum horizontal and vertical extension was measured to the nearest 5 mm using a rule. This process was carried out in all frames of the hive.

To meet the demand for statistics at a local level, Eurostat maintains a system of local administrative units (LAUs) compatible with NUTS. These LAUs are the building blocks of the NUTS, and comprise the municipalities and communes of the European Union. [...]

The LAUs are:

administrative for reasons such as the availability of data and policy implementation capacity a subdivision of the NUTS 3 regions covering the whole economic territory of the Member States appropriate for the implementation of local level typologies included in Tercet, namely the coastal area and DEGURBA classification. Since there are frequent changes to the LAUs, Eurostat publishes an updated list towards the end of each year.
