The dataset contains 8 tables. Three tables provide a linkage between entities: Crop aggregate to single crop, single crop to plant species, pollinating insect to pollinated plant species. One table contains information on the economic impact of pollination on the economic value of crop production. Four tables contain references.

This data is suited for linking data from existing data hubs such as the Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT), national databases containing data on agricultural production, beekeeping and pesticide use, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) as well as data from scientific and technical publications. Possible research questions include the following:

  1. What is the economic impact of pollination by animals on the economic value of crop production in a given area and a given year?
  2. What is the economic value of beehive products relative to the economic value of pollination by animals for crop production in a given area and a given year?
  3. What is the proportion of agricultural land requiring pollination by animals in the total agricultural land in a given area and a given year?
  4. What is the average number of beehives in an area per unit of agricultural land requiring pollination in a given area and a given year?
  5. Which animals are potential pollinators of a given crop or a given plant species in an area?
  6. Which pollinating insects are potentially threatened due to the application of plant protection products on a crop in an area?

Introduction

For a range of crops, pollinating insects are a crucial factor for productivity. Several databases for crop production and classification as well as animal and plant species taxonomy and occurrence exist. To our knowledge, however, there is no publicly available data hub, which allows direct linkage of crop production, plants, and insect pollinators. The currently available data in the dataset was obtained from professionally acquired and reviewed data sources such as the Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT) and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) as well as data from scientific and technical publications. Works by Klein et al. (Klein, et al., 2007) and Gallai et al. (Gallai, Salle, Settele, & Vaissière, 2009) were used as theoretical basis for the economic importance of pollinators for world crops. The present data set is incomplete and intended to be a starting point for further work (data collection, standardisation and harmonisation) on this topic.

Material and methods

Data acquisition

Data from the Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT), the statistical data website of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), was obtained on March 29, 2022. Later versions of the database are therefore not considered. Data from scientific literature and images were acquired manually. Data from FAO is made available under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 IGO license (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 IGO; https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/igo). In addition to this license, some database specific terms of use are listed: https://www.fao.org/contact-us/terms/db-terms-of-use/en/.

Data preparation

Raw data was rearranged and converted to CSV format using Excel (Microsoft Corporation, version 15.0.5293.1000) and subsequently imported for profiling into a MySQL database (Oracle Corporation) running in a XAMPP environment (BitRock, version 2.3.4). Data was exported from the MySQL database to CSV format using windows-1252 coding. Data for this dataset are stored CSV format. Three tables provide a linkage between entities: Crop aggregate to single crop (crop_aggregate), single crop to plant species (crop_species), pollinating insect to pollinated plant species (insect_plant). One table contains information on the economic impact of pollination on the economic value of crop production (pollination_dependency). Four tables contain specific references (ref_flag, ref_image, ref_source, ref_unit) used in this dataset. Data were explored using descriptive statistics. Metrics for selected key columns are reported.

To meet the demand for statistics at a local level, Eurostat maintains a system of local administrative units (LAUs) compatible with NUTS. These LAUs are the building blocks of the NUTS, and comprise the municipalities and communes of the European Union. [...]

The LAUs are:

administrative for reasons such as the availability of data and policy implementation capacity a subdivision of the NUTS 3 regions covering the whole economic territory of the Member States appropriate for the implementation of local level typologies included in Tercet, namely the coastal area and DEGURBA classification. Since there are frequent changes to the LAUs, Eurostat publishes an updated list towards the end of each year.
